Like other Astro City tales, The Dark Age reverses the comic book super-hero paradigm by focusing on ordinary people whose lives are affected in big and little ways by living in a world populated with super-heroes.

Kurt Busiek’s regular cast of super-heroes come in for some heavy drubbing—particularly the Silver Agent—and there to witness it all and drive the story are brothers Charles and Royal Williams. The Williams brothers have a mystery in their past that connects them both to the larger-than-life events unfolding around them. other heroes making appearances in this series include the Blue Knight, Street Angel, and the Apollo Eleven.
