Thun’da was technically part of the series A-1 Comics, an anthology title with a different feature in each issue, but the six Thun’da issues are generally considered to be a standalone run of their own. Thun’da, King of the Congo, was a brazen Tarzan clone of the kind extremely pervasive on the comic stands during the 1940s and 1950s. He made a living contending with greedy ivory poachers and rescuing hapless maidens from the grip of unruly natives. Unremarkable stuff generally, except for the landmark first issue which bears the unique distinction of being the only comic book illustrated cover to end by the great fantasy artist Frank Frazetta. Through Frazetta’s masterful craftsmanship, the jungles teem with life and details; graceful human forms pour across the pages; eyes sunk in moody, shadow-lined faces convey depth far beyond the simplistic stories. Thun’da #1 was later reprinted as Thun’da Tales.
