Hawkman was always one of DC’s most promising characters, an alien policeman operating with his wife on Earth where they chase down bad guys with a combination of brains, wings, and super-scientific gadgetry. Still, he was consistently one of DC’s worst-selling and oft-cancelled super-heroes when placed in his own series.

This 1985 mini-series was an attempt to focus Hawkman’s legend and set the groundwork for years to come. Here Hawkman is called upon to prevent the invasion of Earth. This invasion begins in the shadows with five Thanagarians appearing out of nowhere to force a petty thief to try to steal Hawkman’s anti-gravity device. Hawkman is able to stop that particular theft from occurring, but while he was away, a second squad attacked his wife, Hawkwoman. He returns to help—only to find her image burned into a wall as if by a nuclear explosion!
