Marvel Mystery Comics
(Marvel, 1939-1949)
©1945 Marvel Comics, Inc.
Marvel Comics #1 dated variously October and November, 1939, was the first regular comic from fledgling Marvel Comics. Its inaugural issue introduced readers to such legendary characters as the original Human Torch, the Sub-Mariner, and jungle hero Ka-Zar.
With issue #2, the title changed names to Marvel Mystery Comics. During this time of escalating global tensions, it found a ready audience for such patriotic heroes as the Patriot and Miss America. The Human Torch (with kid sidekick Toro) would soon stop fighting each other and begin battling side by side against the Axis forces. Captain America would also make appearances in later issues.
Although these heroes could conquer the Nazis, they eventually fell to the post-war super-hero malaise. With issue #93, it dropped its super-hero stories and became Marvel Tales (1st Series).
