In a handy manga–sized format, readers are given 96 full–color pages that feature 20 complete stories—all for only $3.95. One thing preventing kids from reading comics is parents who have to pay for them, and it’s easy to say, “No,’ when faced with a $3, 32–page flimsy pamphlet. But, with this kind of bargain, it’s no wonder Disney Adventures sells more than a million copies an issue. This issue features the first non–chapter book appearance of W.I.T.C.H. plus the expected (Kim Possible, Lilo & Stitch, Finding Nemo, etc.), the unexpected (plenty of original characters by top–notch creators), and the surreal (Glen McCoy’s defiantly “off–model” approach to Mickey and Goofy). There’s something for everyone here, even hard–core fanboys of a certain age. Like a beautifully drawn Pirates of the Caribbean drawn by Brett Blevins, where Captain Jack Sparrow teams up with The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. Marvel and DC, take note. I have seen the future of the North American comic book, and it is Disney Adventures Comic Zone.
