The Mask

Following the release of the hyperkinetic and highly successful Mask movie starring Jim Carrey, Dark Horse relaunched the Mask in a new comic book series. To confuse collectors, the series is broken into a number of mini-series-style arcs, including “The Mask Strikes Back,” “Southern Discomfort,” and “World Tour,” each bearing separate cover numbering.

The basic premise of the character is that a strange green mask artifact is passed from person to person. When it is worn, it brings out the wearer’s subconscious desires and transforms him into a larger-than-life cartoon-style character which can act on them—especially the capacity for mad mayhem. Along with the cartoony appearance, the wearer receives bizarre powers and seems to be able to live according to the same laws of physics that work on Saturday morning TV. In short, it poses the question, “What if cartoon powers worked in a comic book world?”
