In its early days, EC’s “E.C.” stood for Educational Comics. Founded by William Gaines’ father, it was a publisher of educational comics such as Picture Stories From the Bible and Picture Stories From World History. These were marketed toward schools as instructional supplements, à la Classics Illustrated. The idea was to use comics to convince children to read information that they otherwise might find a bit dull.

Picture Stories From American History eventually released four volumes, covering the discovery and exploration of America, up to through the twentieth century. Costing just 10¢ each, these were a colorful way to learn history.

Some years after the release of these educational comics, Gaines changed the name of the company to Entertaining Comics and gained fame for publishing such titles as Weird Science and Tales From the Crypt.
