After allowing their flagship hero to flounder through clone sagas and alien symbiote storylines, Marvel brought in Mr. Reboot/Relaunch himself—writer/artist John Byrne (Fantastic Four, Superman: The Man of Steel, X-Men)—to take Spider-Man back to his roots. This limited series retells the web-slinger’s earliest adventures—including classic run-ins with the likes of Doctors Octopus and Doom, the Sandman, and the Vulture—tweaking the longstanding Spider-continuity here and there for the sake of consistency and bringing our hero into the 1990s. As with all of Byrne’s work, Spider-Man: Chapter One shines because of his pure, unadulterated love of the super-hero genre and his unerring sense of what makes a comic book work.
