War Against Crime (Gemstone)

If early super-hero comics portrayed characters that were unrealistically virtuous and upright, crime comics mined the opposite end of the spectrum. War Against Crime, first published in the early 1950s, featured cold, amoral characters that did not let things like murder; kidnapping or blackmail stand in their way of fortune and the easy life. Ultimately, either through the double-crossing schemes of their companions or the tireless efforts of law enforcement, most of these individuals came to bad, and usually deserved, ends, depicted with less-than-subtle graphics.

After twelve issues, the gore aspect usurped crime as the primary attraction and this title became Vault of Horror. However regardless of its title, the implementation of the Comics Code Authority led to the demise of both genres. In 2000, Gemstone collected the first five issues in this trade paperback.
