Rockets & Robots

Komikwerks’ latest anthology delivers pleasing art, particularly from Armand Villavert, who draws over 20% of the book. “Bixby Grant, Private Eye,” is great fun, but in such a short format, sidekick Doc Deadeye points out all the plot holes. This is the problem with half the book: too much concept for a small space, and thus, not enough material for a short story. “Sally Samson” and “Catmandu” both make for good, quick cartoons, though also enforce the hard–to–shake–idea that these stories double as samples for interested producers or publishers. An exception to both pitfalls is Vinton Heuck’s and Eric Canete’s “The Forsaken,” which gets in and out at warp speed. Will Meuginot’s “Monkie Mondei” is a curious inclusion of four pin–ups with practically unrelated word balloons. “Li’l Kali” is a great concept to offends everyone, but could improve with either a higher point to make or a sympathetic element to carry it from the later seasons of Beavis and Butthead into South Park territory. The most intriguing and innovative of these stories is Kurt Christenson and Chris Chua’s “Legend of Liquid Fury,” worth the careful reading it requires.
