Abbott and Costello (St. John)
(St. John, 1948-1956)
St. John
“Who’s on first, What’s on second, I Don’t Know’s on third.” If you’ve heard these words, you’re probably familiar with Abbott and Costello, America’s most popular movie comedy team of the 1940s and early 1950s. During their heyday, Lou Costello’s smallest facial tic was enough to convulse movie crowds to hysterics, and much of their fun-loving hilarity was translated intact to their comic book series thanks to the talented hand of artist Mort Drucker (later of Mad Comics fame).
Abbott and Costello specialized in parodies of other genres, such as their classic horror send up, “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.” The comics take off from this premise by putting the pair into familiar comic situations such as Buck Rogers, which were effective thanks to Drucker’s startling ability to mimic other artists’ styles. Each issue featured two complete stories plus a two-page text section.
