Millennium Edition: Wonder Woman (1st Series)
(DC, 2000)
™ and ©2000 DC Comics
Wonder Woman #1 is not the first appearance of the amazing Amazon (that’s in All-Star Comics #8), nor is it her first lead feature (Sensation Comics #1). However, it is the first issue of her own self-titled series, which would run continuously from 1942 through various re-launches in the 1980s and 90s to the present day. The Golden Age Wonder Woman stories were also a cut above most super-hero fare, as they were penned by clinical psychologist William Moulton Marston and drawn with diagrammatic clarity by Harry G. Peter. In this landmark first issue, Wonder Woman’s origin is retold as she is drawn into the mythic war between love (Aphrodite) and war (Ares/Mars), as played out on Earth between men, women, and the warring armies of World War II. Wonder Woman’s supporting cast is also established, with portly sidekick Etta Candy and burr-headed love interest Major Steve Trevor.
