Star*Reach

(From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)

Groundbreaking anthology title that attempted to create a middle ground between the extreme excesses of the underground and the super-hero-obsessed dullness of Marvel and DC in the mid-1970s. The title featured many of the brightest stars of that period. Some of them went on to greater things, although most have retained a cultish approach in their work that continues to set them apart from the mainstream. Having said that, the title itself has dated badly, with only a few stories showing long-term quality. Others are interesting, especially early work by people such as Dave Sim and Steve Leialoha. Star*Reach was also noticeable for the predominance of writer/artists who proved to have lasting appeal.

Of particular note: Howard Chaykin’s grown-up space opera, Cody Starbuck, in #4; “I’m God,” by Dave Sim and Fabio Gasbarri in issue #7; P.Craig Russell’s early attempt at opera adaptation with Parsifal (#8 and 10); “The Sacred And The Profane,” by Dean Motter and Ken Steacy (#9–13); Gene Day’s “Divine Wind” in #9; Gray Morrow producing an impeccably drawn but rather sixties-looking interpretation of Roger Zelazny’s science-fiction story “The Doors Of His Face,” retitled “The Lamps of His Mouth,” and “Replay” by Michael T.Gilbert, both in #12. ~NF
