Amazing Fantasy (2nd Series)

Named after the short-lived 1960s title that launched a certain web–headed Web Slinger with its final issue (#15, of course), Amazing Fantasy #1 introduces a new Spider-Girl. However, the teen in question appears in costume only on the cover. Thus, modern readers are given yet another slowly paced Marvel series that substitutes “realistic” characterizations and “important” back-story for quick pacing and Stan Lee-style thrills and imagination.

Anya, who will apparently become Spider-Girl at some point, is a brave, highly independent high schooler who’s not afraid of anyone—not even the school bully. This won’t–back–down attitude, which stems in part from the fact that her mother abandoned the family long ago, frequently gets her into trouble, making for a potentially intriguing character. However, the surrounding elements, which include phony dialogue (“Someone’s gonna get kicked!”) and a hackneyed (not to mention confused) co–plot involving a secret agency and a supernatural man in black, make the story somewhat less than amazing.

Nice art, though: It shows ample manga influence, yet it’s highly detailed.
