Superman: End of the Century

This intriguing and beautifully illustrated graphic novel from writer/artist Stuart Immonen (The Adventures of Superman) provides a good deal of background on Lex Luthor’s wife, the Contessa del Portenza. It reveals early on that she has a son who, like the Contessa herself, is an immortal…and who, unlike his mother, is a homicidal maniac.

All of which brings us to the present, when Metropolis is preparing to usher in the new millennium and Lex Luthor’s various holdings are threatened by an arsonist who will continue to target Luthor until he hands his daughter over to her mother, the Contessa. Things really heat up (pun intended) when the Contessa’s son shows up. Looks like Superman’s got his hands full in this one, fighting raging infernos, protecting Luthor and his daughter, and taking down a raging lunatic who—because of his magical origins—drains the Man of Steel’s powers.
