Felix the Cat (Pat Sullivan’s…)

Playful, precocious Felix the Cat has had many more than the requisite nine lives. A Sunday comics strip favorite from the 1920s, Felix was one of the first characters adopted in the new medium of animation. His early adventures, featuring his handy “bag of tricks” won many fans and he was rarely out of print in either comic strips or comic books through the 1940s, 50s and 60s. This short-lived incarnation from Toby Comics in the 1950s finds the midnight-black feline cavorting with human and animal pals in the style of his earliest adventures. The inspired primitivism of the artwork gives Felix’s adventures the look of an illustrated children’s book—something of a departure from the smoother, slicker look that Harvey Comics used in its more famous adaptation of the character. Second-banana humor strips like Donny Boy and Flub fill out the remaining pages.
