Clive Barker’s Hyperkind tells of how, in years gone by, a group of super-powered heroes known as the Paxis fought a version of World War I against alien invaders. Seventy-five years later, they would be all but forgotten.

Then one day, a man who appeared as a drunken bum quite literally dropped from the sky. Soon afterward, his attacker, a giant reptilian creature named Thermakk, Lawgiver of Quo, appeared. The man identified himself as Eschbacher, last of the Paxis, and begged a woman named Lisa to help him. She was to run to the old Heliopolis theater. There she found an abandoned lab and a series of sarcophagi engraved with mystic symbols. When she climbed inside one of them, she found herself changed, her bones replaced with metal, and her body charged with superhuman power. She and three others then became the Hyperkind, a newer, more troubled version of the Paxis heroes of old.
