Fleep

Jason Shiga has crafted a masterful work with Fleep, the story of a man trapped in a concrete-encased phone booth.

What’s a “fleep?” Fleep is the word for phone written in the mysterious foreign language on the booth.

There are some pleasant incongruities between the writing and the art. The drawings are cartoony, barely more than “big foot” style, but the writing is worthy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. There is only one on-panel character, Jimmy, the man in the phone booth (or “fleep booth”). The entire story is a study in deductive reasoning as Jimmy uses the random objects in his pockets and a telephone book (“fleep book”) in a language he does not understand to figure out where he is, how he got there, how he’s going to get out, and how long he has to do so.

It’s a wonderful story, but an awkward size. At nine inches wide by six inches tall, the package may be easily overlooked. But it’s worth looking for.
