Reinventing Comics

    (Paradox, 2000)
™ and ©2000 Scott McCloud

In 1993, Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics became the definitive text on, well, understanding comics, and their unique place in American popular culture. In this 2000 follow-up, McCloud (Zot!) steps beyond a mere analysis of comics and their impact on the past and present. Reinventing Comics is nothing less than a manifesto, an examination of the future of comics, as well as the current events and market climate that might help or hinder that future. In the book, McCloud identifies and explores 12 revolutions or ideals toward which comics can and should strive if the comics industry is to evolve and endure. These revolutions range from such perennial hot-button topics as creators’ rights and the acceptance of comics as both a form of art and literature, to digital distribution of comics online (a particularly favorite topic of McCloud’s). Often gutsy, always provocative, Reinventing Comics is must-reading for any student of the medium.
