Animal Rights Comics
(Stabur, 1996)
™ and ©1996 PETA
If you are empathetic at all, Animal Rights Comics is a difficult read. It is not that the animals are depicted with any degree of anthropomorphism, rather it is the portrayal of humans and our actions that leave the reader with a profound sense of shame. This is the story of Ingrid Newkirk and Alex Pacheo who founded P.E.T.A.: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Writer Joyce Brabner, whose previous social commentary comics work includes, Brought to Light and Real War Stories, working with artist Mark Badger, (The Score), recounts the lives of Newkirk and Pacheo as they discover that man’s cruelty to man is exceeded only by his arrogance toward animals. Some may believe P.E.T.A.’s stance is extreme, but no one who can bear to read the events that are related in this book could challenge their integrity.
