Sucker the Comic

    (Troma, 1998)
™ and ©1998 Troma Entertainment, Inc.

Troma Entertainment makes mind-numbingly bad films—“The Toxic Avenger” and “Sgt. Kabukiman, NYPD”—that one must watch simply because they are so bad. That’s part of the fun. Unfortunately, bad-but-fun cinema doesn’t necessarily translate into bad-but-fun comic book. Case in point: Sucker. It’s the story of a female vampire’s quest to regain her humanity. There’s gratuitous sex and violence, but the artwork in this black-and-white one-shot is so sketchy that the characters look different from page to page. If the quality of the comic book had been better, then enjoying this adaptation of a low-quality film might have been possible. Still, the Toxic Avenger and Kabukiman show up at the beginning of the tales as our “hosts” as a kind of humorous nod to the likes of the Crypt-Keeper and his E.C. comrades.
