The Life and Works of Hieronymus Bosch

    (Shooting Star, 1995)

The paintings of Hieronymus Bosch are among the strangest, distrubing and enigmatic in the whole history of European art. The world he creates is full of demons and monsters, strange animals and humans suffering diabolical tortures in scenes of hell. Much of his work is based on an obscure symbolism which, although it may have been understood and have had a powerful influence in the 15th century when he was alive, is now no longer fully decypherable. The great interest to us today lies in an extraordinary imagination that is able to create creatures and scenes that seem to reflect our own deepest doubts and fears.
