Funny animals were a hot trend of the 1940s, 50s and – in a more limited role – during the 60s. There was a bit of a revival of the genre in the 1980s when the classic Howard the Duck and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics hit the scene, but the genre really never grabbed readers again like it had in earlier years. Space Racers tries to combine this classic genre with the grandeur of space by pitting its vaguely rabbit-like heroine in a cosmos spanning race against other creatures of indistinct animal/human origin. The black and white art has a very distinct manga feel, but the writing lacks substance and the pacing is jerky at best.
