Sure, Georges Jeanty’s a veteran to X-Men comics, having worked on the Bishop series years ago. Sure, Gambit’s a fan–favorite X–Man, though his Ultimate version’s been receiving more attention as of late. The fatal flaw in the latest attempt at a Gambit series is that writer John Layman gets the ragin’ Cajun all wrong. His accent comes and goes more often than Kevin Costner’s. Though Gambit’s a thief at heart, is it really in–character for him to go back to stealing for money after his long history with the X-Men? He performs a selfless act earlier in the comic book by trashing a rampaging Sentinel, but a character who can discard his moral center whenever it suits him is tough to root for.

The antagonist Jack Jessup is a great foil for Gambit. He’s just as good a thief as Remy, but he hates mutants and has a nasty streak a mile wide. When these two finally throw down later in the series, it will be a sight to see.
