Giant-Size Captain Marvel

™ and © Marvel Characters, Inc.

In the 1970s, Marvel produced a series of giant-size specials entitled—appropriately enough—Giant-Size Avengers, Giant-Size Spider-Man, Giant-Size Defenders, etc. Some of these extra-thick titles featured new stories, while others were made up of reprints.

The first and only issue of Giant-Size Captain Marvel reprints issues 17, 20, and 21 of the Kree warrior’s title, which features scripts by comics legends Roy Thomas (All-Star Squadron) and Gil Kane (Green Lantern). Here, Marvel’s space-born super-hero bonds with perennial sidekick Rick Jones—the stereotypical teenager who palled around with Captain America and the Avengers—and frees himself from the Negative Zone. This bond allows the good Captain and Rick to switch places when one or the other is needed, making their relationship similar to the one between a certain Billy Batson and another Captain Marvel. This reprint collection also features a battle royale between Captain Marvel and the Hulk, another one of Rick Jones’ former partners.
