Animated movies targeted at adults used to be pretty rare, and even today they’re hardly common. Consequently, the 1981 film Heavy Metal, based on the illustrated science fiction magazine, was somewhat controversial for its time. The merging of stylized art and music was groundbreaking, and this book—first published in 1981 and updated and expanded in 1996—gives an inside look at its development, from concept sketches and background development to anecdotal stories about the making of the movie from its creators.

Fans of the film will enjoy this in-depth look at its making and the stories behind the stories; fans of animated movies in general will appreciate the insights into how a film evolves from both the printed page and the imagination.
