Smitty

™ and ©1949 The Chicago Tribune

Smitty began as a one-page gag strip but soon evolved into a humor-adventure series strongly in the classic 1930s genre pioneered by such better-known features such as Wash Tubbs, Little Orphan Annie, and Alley Oop. Smitty is a kid of about ten years old, prone to mischief, who gets wrapped up in all sorts of wild adventures with his pal Bailey, a ne’er-do-well sailor with a large white star-shaped scar on his cheek. Smitty and Bailey tackle the usual assortment of pirates, crooked millionaires, spies, and restless natives in their lighthearted but surprisingly action-packed adventures. The art by “Berndt” is rudimentary in style but extremely effective for storytelling.
