The old gods have been asleep too long. It was the time of the Fourth World, the time of the white man. The old native American ways had been forgotten, their people scattered and killed. When all the worshipers have forgotten the old ways, what could the spirit gods do, but wait for the next world to sweep them all away? They stayed in their lodge between the worlds—all except for White-Buffalo-Woman, who had left to travel the world of men in disguise.

Twenty five ears ago, during the summer of love, one man learned how to drum to summon the gods. He forgot the rhythm, but after a dosing up on mescaline in the midst of the desert, he remembered. He began drumming again, and this time, the gods listened.

The Fifth World was about to begin.
