Although dozens of writers and artists have made their mark in comics over the years, one name tends to stand out. Stan Lee, born Stanley Lieber, has at one time either co-created, plotted or written for virtually every character at Marvel Comics. Even now, over sixty years since he began as a gopher at Timely Comics (Marvel’s forerunner), every Marvel comic published proclaims “Stan Lee Presents…” in the masthead.

This, then, is the story (although officially unauthorized) of the man who made Marvel Comics great and kept them at the top of the market for decades, often by sheer force of will. By necessity, it is also a chronicle of Marvel Comics. Their history is so intertwined it is impossible to separate the two.

This book was the first in a series of biographies of offbeat, but influential people, followed by biographies of Boris Yeltsin, Gene Roddenberry, and even Pee Wee Herman!
