Underworld Unleashed: Patterns of Fear

In 1995, the demon Neron supernaturally enhanced the powers of several super-villains—in exchange for their souls, of course—and caused no end of trouble for the heroes of the DC Universe in a company-wide crossover entitled Underworld Unleashed. In addition to the two-issue mini-series and the related issues of several super-hero titles, DC published four one-shot tie-ins: Abyss—Hell’s Sentinel, Apokolips—Dark Uprising, Batman—Devil’s Asylum, and this special that stars former Batgirl Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. wheelchair-bound hacker-supreme Oracle.

Patterns of Fear serves two purposes: first of all, it offers background information—from Oracle’s extensive computer archives—on the villains who have accepted Neron’s offer of power for soulless afterlives; second, it places the erstwhile Batgirl in a bit of moral quandary. What is she willing to give up to regain the use of her legs? Find out in this excellent tale from veteran writer Roger Stern (The Avengers, Superman) and Anthony Williams (Batman: Toyman, Scare Tactics).
