In 3040, Max Wrighter was among the discoverers of the alien technology which Wrighter helped transform into the Dream Network—the “DreamNet.” The network connected directly into its users’ minds, promising them entertainment and education. The E-CO company that bought Wrighter’s technology, however, had other plans.

In 3054, they hooked a madman up to the DreamNet. The nature of his illness allowed him to become the first “Radical Dreamer”—one whose very consciousness left his body and wandered the Net. His madness entered the minds of the users, instantly killing 10% of the DreamNet subscribers. But while Wrighter was horrified, E-CO saw only the potential for profit. E-CO threatened to turn to other, less principled staff members to develop Radical Dreaming unless Wrighter would help them. So Wrighter was forced to try to become a Radical Dreamer—leaving his body behind and floating madly in a world of dreams.
