Marvel Team-Up (3rd Series)

One problem with the old Marvel Team-Up title was its limitation of having Spider-Man, à la The Brave and the Bold, only appear with one other super-hero per issue. This new incarnation is a lot looser; absolutely everyone can show up for a single-panel appearance or an extended stay.

Another problem with the original series was that most of the stories read like the lukewarm leftover inventory issues they were. It’s clear writer Robert Kirkman has been dying to get his hands on Marvel characters from the way sparks invariably fly between whoever’s in a panel. And it should go without saying that Scott Kolins’ art is nothing short of spectacular.

The plot, a nice spin on the “we must save the poor innocent mutant” trope, is a sprawling mess that has an alternative-universe version of a familiar character and an attempt to create a major new “big bad” unnecessarily shoehorned into it. Unfortunately, Titannus reads like another generic armored creep that keeps his lady in a jar (not unlike Kang and his Ravonna). Ultimately, though, it’s good, old-fashioned fun.
