Two Fools

    (Last Gasp, 1976)
™ and ©1976 Ted Richards

Two Fools was an unpretentious underground humor strip from the early to mid-70s, the work of artist Ted Richards and writer Willy Murphy. The two fools, probably modeled somewhat on the creators, stumble mutely across various absurd landscapes, from pre-historic settings to science-fiction adventures on other planets. The strip squeezes laughs out of each panel, rather than building up to any big payoff. Richards’ art is straightforward and easy to read, somewhere between Don Martin and Robert Crumb. Murphy avoids underground clichés for the most part, harking back to a Krazy Kat style of absurdist humor. Unfortunately, Murphy died of viral pneumonia in 1976 and the Fools were rarely heard from again.
