Superman: Strength

This three–issue Prestige Format limited series explores the origins of Superman’s super–strength within the tale of the son of a super–criminal who wants to show up his dad—whose endeavors were thwarted by the Man of Steel. To give his plans some muscle, the young man assembles and army of mercenaries to help him break into LexCorp and steal back a teleportation device that was originally stolen from him. Still, there’s one problem: even with a small army under his command, he’s still weaker and slower than Superman, who will undoubtedly foil his illicit endeavors.

Writer Scott McCloud juxtaposes the criminal’s efforts to evade the Man of Steel’s grasp with a reflection on Clark Kent’s youth, at the time when his super–powers were in their nascent stages. While something of a perfunctory Superman story, this three–parter explores some interesting aspects of the Metropolis Marvel’s development and, like so many projects that feature him these days, focuses on his significance among DC’s pantheon of super–heroes.
