Hunter X Hunter

    (Viz, 2005-2019)
™ and © 1998 POT (Yoshihiro Togashi)
Graphic novel; Read right to left; b&w

Raised by his Aunt Mito, Gon displays an uncanny ability to commune with nature. But now he wants to emulate his legendary (but missing) father and become a hunter. This job is a blend of being a treasure hunter, detective, and king of the jungle. Many are called but few are licensed!

Guaranteed wealth is what attracts the Lupin–like Leorio. Revenge is what drives martial Kurapika. After enduring stormy seas, the trio find themselves in an exam hall filled with hundreds of applicants. But, in this ultimate game of Survivor, each person’s life is on the line. Can Gon and his new friends endure deadly beasts, strange traps, and homicidal rivals?

Part of the re–launch of Viz’ Shonen Jump Advanced imprint, Hunter X Hunter is a familiar tale of a boy’s rite of passage into manhood. Gon resembles Goku (Dragonball), Naruto, et al. But Yoshihiro Togashi’s art often lacks the consistency and detail of his popular predecessors. However, the formula is tried and true and appeals to the universal desire of youths for adventure as well as a passing grade.
