The Mystery Play

God—or more accurately, the actor who played him—is dead, murdered, while putting on a “Mystery Play” for the masses in a small English town. Efforts to revive the plays, which traditionally celebrated the Christian Story, from Creation to Doomsday, seem to have been dealt a blow. But the men who started them, including a cynical reverend and a scandal-plagued mayor, decide the show must go on. Meanwhile, a tormented police detective looking to crack the case and a hard-edged reporter looking for one big story strive to get to the bottom of the mystery. Will either of them learn the truth in time?

Written with layers upon layers by Grant Morrison and evocatively painted by Jon J. Muth, this hardbound story is horrifying and mesmerizing, like an epic dream or nightmare. Published under DC’s Vertigo imprint
