The Congressional Medal of Honor is America’s highest military honor, given to those brave few who rise far beyond the call of duty, risking their lives in the service of their country. In 1994, Dark Horse Comics produced this special to tell the real stories of two Congressional Medal of Honor winners.

First is Lt. Charles Q. Williams, who served in the early days of the war in Viet Nam. Back in 1965, Americans were merely advisors in the conflict, but when Williams’ base was attacked, they became more than observers. Wounded in the initial skirmish, he led his men through an all-night fire fight, putting back the V.C. advance. In the morning, an air strike leveled the compound, but the helicopters due to evacuate them were ambushed by V.C. forces. After several hours of fierce fighting, rescue was finally at hand. Although he had been hit multiple times, Williams insisted that others be evacuated before him.
