Petrefax is an undertaker of great renown and ability; while traveling, he comes across the land of Malegrise, a country where everyone is a sorcerer. This proves problematic as our hero is hired by a nobleman to take care of the funeral of his daughter Calcinia and discovers that she is not truly dead. In trying to get out of a marriage to Lord Bulgus, Calcinia had used magic to gain insight into the local lord’s dreams and to prove that he had gained his title by killing his brother. In response to Calcinia’s eavesdropping, Bulgus had torn her soul in half, leaving her undead. With the help of Petrefax, Calcinia is determined to expose Bulgus’s crime, but her physical body may give out before she gets the chance. Intriguing stuff from writer Mike Carey and artist Steve Leialoha (Spider-Woman).
