Longshot (2nd Series)

This one-shot Longshot special bears the strong stamp of its writer, J.M. DeMatteis. It’s told as a fairy tale of sorts, with Longshot playing the role of the holy fool who sets out in search of “something” one day, then runs across a big bad monster who eats him alive. Longshot seemed to slay the monster by attacking him from inside, but instead both Longshot and the monster wound up on our world. There, Longshot befriended a small girl who was later driven mad by her encounter with the monster. Longshot, who appeared for all the world to be the troublesome drifter that the locals inherently distrust, was blamed for the attack. He escaped, took refuge in a mental institution, and managed to marshal the assorted eccentrics there into a force to battle the monster. Their weapon, however, was their own combined hopes and love. DeMatteis specializes in these New Age-style stories, and whether you consider the special inspiring or cloying is likely to depend on your own tolerance for this brand of spirituality.
