Kull the Conqueror (1st Series)

Marvel launched Kull in 1971, a year after making a hit with Robert E. Howard’s better-known swordsman, Conan the Barbarian. Both characters were barbarians who would slay kings to become kings themselves. Whereas Conan did this toward the end of his life (see King Conan), Kull’s adventures really begin when he slew a tyrant so that he might claim the Topaz Throne of fabled Atlantis.

Kull rules in a world that is still young, and which the old gods have not quite departed. Chief among his enemies are the shape-shifting snake men, descendants of the snake gods who once ruled the world. Luckily, Kull has help in fighting them, including his trusted friend (and sometimes rival), Brule the Spear-Slayer, a Pictish savage.

The series changed names with issue #11, becoming “Kull the Destroyer.”
