This two-issue mini-series from Dark Horse adapts the special effects-laden, big-budget, action movie of the same name. Veteran comics writer Bruce Jones (Somerset Holmes) does a fine job of translating the determination of the recruits as they oppose the giant invading bugs and at the same time relates the tragic love story of Johnny Rico and Dizzy Flores. Starship Troopers, the movie, was adapted from Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel, which was written during the Cold War and is a thinly disguised metaphor for the advancement of Communism and the responsibilities of the citizenry. The movie and comic, however, refrain from preaching a message in favor of a straightforward good-versus-evil war story.
