U.N. Force
(Gauntlet, 1993-1997)
Gauntlet
U.N. Force is an international group of super-powered beings whose purpose is to help the U.N. stop regional conflicts, and broader problems like global terrorism. The membership reads like a roll call of the U.N. itself, with representatives from from all manner of countries, backgrounds, and ideologies. And, like the U.N. itself, this group is often so busy bickering among themselves that they have little energy to spare for the common enemy.
U.N. Force boasts of having the largest group of super-heroes of any title in comics. Whereas teams like the Avengers or the Justice League sometimes feel top-heavy with eight or nine principal characters, U.N. Force has an incredible twenty-five members. Such a team poses a monumental burden to the art and writing teams—as well as to the folks forced to do trademark searches on each of the codenames. That the concept succeeds at all is a tribute to the fluid writing of creator Brent Dorian Carpenter.
