War is Hell

January, 1973 was a big month for Marvel, with more new title launches than at virtually any other such period in their history. Frankenstein (The Monster of…), The Cat, Night Nurse, Crypt of Shadows, and Chamber of Chills had all just appeared. These were joined by War is Hell, an anthology war comic which tried to follow up the success of Sgt. Fury.

As war comics of the era go, War is Hell was surprisingly upbeat. Despite the title, it was a rather hopeful collection of stories, showing how good men, fighting cleverly and courageously, could turn the tide. This was true whether the men in question were cavalry riders in the American Civil War or infantrymen facing tanks in World War II.
