A one-shot spin-off of the Sidekicks limited series, The Substitute is a rare combination – for American comics, at least – of high-school drama and super-hero action/adventure. The Shuster Academy, a school for kids with extraordinary abilities, hires a new substitute teacher, who happens to be a former super-villain, Ms. Abra. Because of her past, Abra is eyed with suspicion by faculty and a number of students. Takeshi Miyazawa’s manga-styled artwork suits the story well since high-school stories are common in Japan.
