Truer Than True Romance

This trade paperback takes a page from John Lustig’s Last Kiss; it reworks classic romance comics (in this case, DC’s) with all new dialogue. The results are more often than not good for a hearty laugh.

Examples: Lora has an unlucky attraction to gay men (and an unnatural thing for swans, to boot!). In “Carry-On Girl,” a woman has an irrational aversion to checking her luggage. Nan, star of “My Heart of Darkness,” is denigrated for her nihilistic short stories. In “Too Dumb for Love,” EPA investigator Paul researches why an entire town has gone stupid. These and other stories turn the genre on its ear.

The book also features advice columns and a quiz, similarly reworded. Advice columnists include the snippy “Tess T.,” negative “Dee Pressen” and others.
