The Proteus is a super-secret submarine with a unique design feature: it can change shape automatically, presumably to fool enemies and to impersonate sea creatures. Commanded by Admiral Jonathan Leigh, the Proteus patrols the seas, exploring underwater reaches and engaging in specialized military operations.

Voyage to the Deep was an original comic book concept from Dell during the early 1960s, but was produced with all the character and originality that the publisher brought to its usual fare of television and movie adaptations. Voyage to the Deep submerged after four issues.
