In 1995, Marvel preempted its X-titles to take readers into an alternate universe created when Legion (Professor Xavier’s son) went back in time and killed Professor X before he could found the X-Men. The result was a dark world in which Apocalypse and his mutant cohorts declared war on humans and began a genocidal rule of North America. This was the Age of Apocalypse.

The story kicked off with this special “X-Men Alpha” edition, and would later conclude with X-Men Omega. In X-Men Alpha we meet the new X-Men, led by Magneto, who would otherwise be their mortal enemy. Magneto and Rogue have wed and have a son, Charles. Meanwhile, Wolverine and Jean Grey are a couple on the run, Angel runs a secret bar in the clouds that he calls Heaven, the Summers brothers, Cyclops and Havok,work for Apocalypse, and only a mysterious stranger exists to tell this brave new world what might have been.
