Seaguy

Not everyone will like Seaguy, which is a shame since Grant Morrison and Cameron Stewart’s heroic quest tale is an uncut dose of fun. Alternately faulted as esoteric and a blatant list of social pop, the comic is its own defense. Its personality carries the eponymous hero through seemingly arbitrary developments that eventually reveal a more cohesive story. Like all superhero comics, Seaguy follows its own bizarre logic, but refreshingly skirts the pretensions to reality most clutch. The characters are vaguely aware they’re springing punchlines, but follow where the comedy takes them. The reader’s best move is to do the same. Very few artists are worthy of a complex storyteller like Morrison, but Stewart’s impeccably plotted panels make the thickly scripted pages look like a warm day in a sunny field. Seaguy belongs on your reading list; just be ready and eager for something different.
