Droopy

Created by Tex Avery, Droopy Dog has become one of America’s most beloved comic characters. Low-key to extreme, he makes the perfect straight man to the outlandish comic situations Avery placed him in. Droopy’s other trademark is the voice he was given in animated features—something which sadly, comics can’t communicate.

Still, this three-issue series from Dark Horse does a terrific job of showing Droopy at his hilarious best. In the story “Doctor Droopenstein,” Droopy needs a brain to complete his creation. So, when a wolf visitor drops by the castle, the little dog quietly launches scheme after scheme to hack his visitor to pieces in order to obtain the needed brain. What makes the story so funny is the good humor and courtesy Droopy shows his “guest” when his schemes fail. As an added bonus, the series also features backup stories starring Screwball Squirrel.
