With Queen Joo-sama of the Golden Kingdom preparing to celebrate her 1000th birthday, Empress Alicia of Xanadu and her courtiers accept the invitation to attend the festivities. The royal flagship, Amalthea, is equipped and debarks without incident.

High in the Tyber Peaks, the two youngest of the magical race of kyryn have disappeared in search of adventure. Tzu Li and her twin brother Tzu Kai find it when they spy the Amalthea. Tzu Kai falls in love with Alicia at first sight, and plots to spirit her away.

His plan results in the sinking of the Amalthea and the capture of her passengers and crew by the mysterious Digger people. Only Ålicia and Kinomon make it safely to land, or do they? The only islan close by is where the kyryn twins have set up house.

How will the Diggers treat their prisoners? Will Alicia and Kinomon survive the tender mercies of the young kyryn? Will they ever reach the Golden Kingdom?
